Remember Boyz Unlimited, the spoof Ch4 boyband documentary, written by Matt Lucas and David Walliams, and starring a young(er) James Corden and Lee Williams? The six episodes are available in their entirety on 4od, and the good news is, it's aged incredibly well. I'm up to episode 4, and the humour is still as sharp and witty as it seemed in 1998.
James Corden plays Gareth, the fat singer songwriter - who doesn't write the songs. Lee Williams plays Scott, the unpopular member (although, who knows why, because... it's Lee Williams, ffs!), and then there's Jason and Nicky, the bad boy and the cute one, respectively.
It's a bit silly in places (the subplot with Nicky's headmistress gets way too far-fetched from episode three) and it isn't really gay enough, but the show really succeeds at highlighting how farcical the manufactured boyband industry became in the nineties. Boyz Unlimited and Boys Limited ("They don't even spell Boys with a Z! Get a dictionary!") releasing the same song on the same day, for example, is pretty much the best plot ever.
And did I mention: Lee Williams!
